Katy is coming off its ninth straight state championship after rolling through Cedar Hill 51-14 in the Class 6A, Division II state final.
The nine titles owned by the Tigers are second-most in University Interscholastic League history. The Tigers will be in the mix again this season with several starters returning on both sides of the ball as they look for their 10th state title.
Katy coach Gary Joseph will return for his 18th season as he tries to secure his sixth state title at Katy. He will have some talent in tow.
Rising junior Seth Davis returns to lead the Katy rushing attack, while quarterback Caleb Koger returns after starting for the Tigers during his sophomore season. Meanwhile, Texas A&M commit Bobby Taylor is just one of six returning starters on the Tigers’ defense.
Meanwhile, North Shore made it all the way to the Class 6A, Division I state semifinal, but fell short against Austin Westlake 24-21. The loss ended the Mustangs’ 29 game winning streak that netted them two state championships in the process.
However, North Shore will have to replace two All-Americans in Dematrius Davis and Shadrach Banks.
The defense will be key for the Mustangs with defensive back Denver Harris and lineman Kristopher Ross, a Texas commit, returning to lead the squad.
Atascocita coach Craig Stump will enter his 10th year leading the Eagles. Stump has turned Atascocita into one of the top programs in the city since he arrived in Humble ISD in 2012.
The Eagles have eight returning starters on offense and defense.
Quarterback Gavin Session is back to lead the up-tempo Eagles offense and five-star tackle Kam Dewberry will help lead the offensive line in the trenches.
Stump’s best season at Atascocita was back in 2016 when the Eagles made it to the state semifinals.
With a lot of Eagles returning, Atascocita will look to make its mark this season and make a run at a state title.
